Solar energy products need environmentally responsible standards, says study

While solar energy may be one of the fastest growing forms of energy in the country, a new study suggests the industry still has some environmental health and safety adjustments it must make to improve its products' quality.

A new study by the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition has found that much of the solar energy industry still lacks widespread standards to make its products as environmentally safe and "green" as the renewable energy it produces.

"Solar power is key to helping solve the world’s climate crisis," said Sheila Davis, executive director of the SVTC. "But the industry still faces serious issues that need to be addressed before it can be considered truly ‘clean and green’ and socially just."

Of the 14 solar energy products companies surveyed, more than half said they supported mandatory take-back and recycling programs where their solar panels are sold, while 50 percent said they would consider offering recycling programs to consumers free of charge.

"The solar industry can learn from other industries that have adopted responsible social, environmental and supply chain standards in order to prevent future problems," added Steven Heim, director of social research and advocacy for Boston Common Asset Management.

Thirty-six percent of the companies surveyed said they currently conducted risk assessment tests on new materials used in their panels.
