The project was the culmination of a partnership between the NBA franchise and California-based solar energy company The Solar Company and led to the creation of the first-ever solar installation to be used at an NBA practice facility.
The solar system will supplement 26 percent of the facility's current electrical usage and save the company approximately $36,000 per year. The solar panels utilized in the product cover approximately 9,641-square-feet.
"We're excited about this new agreement with The Solar Company," said Warriors President Robert Rowell during the announcement of the collaboration last November. "We view ourselves as an industry leader in many perspectives and this is certainly another unique element that we've added to our business. We're dedicated to any initiatives and elements that help preserve our environment."
The ribbon cutting for the installation occurred last Thursday and was attended by Rowell, Solar Company President Mark Danenhower, as well as rookie guard Stephen Curry.
The Warriors are not the first team to turn to solar power as a means to save money and preserve the environment. According to PlanetSave.com, the aptly-named Phoenix Suns installed 1,125 solar panels on their parking garage in 2008 to help power their arena.
