The panels, built over the NJMC's parking lot, would provide 20 percent of the electricity needs of the group's administration building. New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities would provide funding for the projects through a Customer On-Site Renewable Energy rebate.
"The NJMC is helping position the Meadowlands District for an environmentally and economically sustainable future" by "embracing alternative energy and promoting energy efficiency," executive director Robert Ceberio said.
Coincidentally, the commission is leading the way in bringing renewable energy to northern New Jersey residents. Its Municipal Solar Assistance Program provides assistance to communities looking to install solar power on municipal buildings or schools.
And the NJMC has set a goal of 20 megawatts of renewably-generated energy by 2020. By the same year, the state's Energy Master Plan projects, 30 percent of Garden State electricity will come from solar panels and other renewable sources.
