This week, a report in the Arizona Daily Star noted that one of the Tucson area's largest solar energy projects is currently in progress. According to the newspaper the facility will generate 1 megawatt of power to meet about 15 percent of the electricity needs for a local wastewater reclamation plant.
The newspaper notes that 90 out of 3,690 photovoltaic panels are already in place for the project, which reportedly will be run by Solon America under a 20-year contract with the county. The report adds that the county expects to save about $1.5 million on electricity costs during that time.
While this project is not high-profile from a national standpoint, it is one of many that are currently underway in Arizona. Several major projects are being developed in the northern part of the state.
The University of Arizona is also home to a nationally known research facility that has made significant contributions to the growth of the solar energy industry over the years.
