A recent Los Angeles Times report features the Anaheim Hilton, which has a bright white roof that reflect sunlight, which is said to reduce the building's surface temperature as much as 50 degrees by deflecting 85 percent of the heat that strikes it.
The heat-reflecting surface was reportedly invented by an 82-year old former military scientist, and according to the newspaper, the entire Hilton hotel chain could adopt the cool roof technology if it is deemed a success in Anaheim.
The article also mentioned one man who used reflecting paint to cut his summer electric bills by more than 50 percent, and who was quoted as saying his investment would pay off within a couple of years.
This same technology got a big boost earlier in the year when Energy Secretary Steven Chu cited the considerable energy-saving potential of cool roof technology. This combined with other resources like solar energy could help the environment greatly as well as the economy.
